The Argideen River Lodges

In one of the loveliest valleys in County Cork, just three miles from the sea, stands the Old Mill Building at Inchy Bridge.

Rediscovered by Tim Severin some 30 years ago, the Mill was brought back to life to provide four comfortable self-catering Lodges for visitors and their families.

Each Lodge comprises a large kitchen-living room downstairs with a wood burning stove to keep the cold at bay. Upstairs consists of one good sized double room and a second bedroom with four full size bunks as well as a shower room and airing cupboard. Downstairs, visitors can relax watching TV (RTE and UK channels), surfing the web or relaxing outside with a drink overlooking the meadow just a stone’s throw away from the river.

Comfort on wet days is assured by double glazing and central heating throughout, and an outside patio allows guests to enjoy sunny evenings. 30 metres away across the lawn is the purpose-built Service Centre, comprising a rod room, a laundry with two washing machines and dryers. Groceries can be bought next door at the ‘Creamery’, the Farmers’ Co-operative.

There are magnificent walks along the valley, the haunt of otters and herons, and scenic drives along the spectacular coastline of County Cork. In the evenings entertainment can be found in local bars and cafes, and the region is justly famous for some of the best restaurants in the British Isles, specialising in home-grown produce.

Best of all the lodge visitor has only to walk across the watermeadow to be on the banks of the ‘Little Silver Stream’, the Argideen River, rated one of the best sea trout rivers in the south-west. Fishing rights on the Argideen are included in the rental.

With its tranquil and unspoiled setting, the Argideen River Lodges have won a coveted Environmental Award, and are an ideal choice for a relaxing family holiday and are pet friendly.

Fishing on the Argideen

Sea Trout & Salmon

The Argideen has been one of the best kept secrets of Irish game angling. For more than half a century this small and completely unspoiled river in County Cork has provided delightful sea trout fishing for a handful of local residents who have fished in the pools since childhood. While other Irish rivers were larger and more publicised, the Argideen consistently produced good catches of sea trout year after year. In 1991 with major sea trout rivers under threat, the Argideen had one of its finest runs of sea trout for a decade – prime healthy fish. To protect this invaluable resource for the future a Limited Private Company purchased the lower Argideen Fishery and granted Argideen River Lodges the sole right to offer accommodation and Guest Rods on the Fishery.

The Old Mill building stands in its own water meadow, just 50 metres from one of the most prolific pools on the river. Here in complete tranquility the day fishing for wild brown trout on the fly, worm to catch sea trout, and spinning for the occasional salmon. The cream of the fishing begins at dusk…

The first sea trout usually enter the Argideen in April with the fishing gathering pace in mid-May and continuing through the peak months of June, July, August and September. The season closes in mid-October.

Central heating – By default the lodges have their central heating switched off during the summer months – June through to September – as there is typically no requirement for it at these times. If guests do want to turn it on, this is easily done by boosting the current program or by upping the current temperature. During the winter months, the heating is set to come on at 7:30am and then run through until 10:30pm going from 18°c in the morning to 20°c later in the day. Temperatures are set with a thought for the environment and not wanting to overheat unnecessarily but can be changed up or down on the control. Please note, there is a maximum limit of 21°c set during standard hours.

In addition to central heating, each lodge is equipped with a wood burning stove which can be used as an additional source of heating, providing a cosy feeling throughout the lodge. Logs, kindling and firelighters for the stove can be purchased from the shop next door or at most local supermarkets and gas stations.

Other Information

Towels and bedding – These are provided for use in the lodges. You will need to bring your own beach / outdoor towels with you for your stay.

Pets – pets are welcome in lodge 1 where they can be kept in the large conservatory at the rear of the building. They are strictly not allowed upstairs, on furniture or in carpeted areas, we trust you can understand this requirement which is to avoid damage / issues with future guests. If you are thinking of bringing your pet consideration needs to be given to our other permanent tenants and guests. We ask that they are quiet, especially at night, kept under control and cleaned up after at all times whilst on the site. Please let us know if you intend to bring your pet at the time of booking when we can help further.

Fishing

Each lodge comes with one full Guest Rod, please note this is the licence to fish the river not the physical rod or a State Rod Licence, see below. All fishing tackle should be brought with you or purchase on arrival, Halfway Angling / Tackle Direct Ireland is a good local site for this. Additional fishing tickets on the Argideen are available at Inchy Bridge in the evening at €20 per day and €10 per night.

Other fishing in the locality (approx. pricing) – Salmon fishing on the Bandon River, €40 per day – Courtmacsherry Sea Angling, €70 per person (boat charter) – Stocked Trout lakes, €15 per day.

A State Rod Licence is required to fish for salmon and sea trout. These can be bought directly from the tackle shop at Halfway, between Cork and Bandon, or from the Secretary of the Bandon club and other local venues, approx. €36 per day or €50 for 21 days. Alternatively they can be purchased online prior to your arrival from the Inland Fisheries Ireland store which also includes further information on angling in Ireland as well as any restrictions on the rivers in Cork and other districts.
